"Is" was frequently used in Old English. Have a look at this entry of the verb ''wesan'' for examples of ''is'' isin usage: [http://web.ff.cuni.cz/cgi-bin/uaa_slovnik/gmc_search_v3?cmd=formquery2&query=wesan&startrow=1]. ''Biþ'' was also used, but apparently often with a slightly different meaning (future time, or habitual action).
