The word "state" refers to an fully independent entity, and it's only relatively recently that US centralization has given the word a connotation of being a sub-entity. The current version translates more to "United Provinces of America", and even though that is the political reality nowadays, especially after Raich vs. Ashcroft, it isn't a very good translation. --[[:jbo:User:Blabak|Blabak]]
