In fact, we cannot use 'Beþþleæm': that is inauthentic.
To quote some examples:
- Parker Chronicle, year 2: Þa tungelwitgan of eastdæle cuomon to þon þæt hie Crist weorþedon ⁊ þa cild on Bethlem ofslægene wærun for Cristes ehtnesse from Herode.
- Abingdon Chronicle, year 2: Ða þry tungolwitigan of eastdæle coman to ðam þæt hie Crist weorþodan, ⁊ þa cild on Bethleem ofslegene wæran for Cristes ehtnesse fram Herode.
- Laud Chronicle, year 2: Ða tungel witegan of eastdæle coman to þan þæt hi Crist wurðoden. And þa cild on Bethleem ofslagene wæron for ehtnesse fram Herode. ⁊ he swealt ofsticod fram him sylfum. ⁊ Archelaus his sune feng to rice.
From these I would say it should be 'Bethleem'. The same spelling is used in Ælfric's translation of Genesis, in Genesis 48:7. (None of the other Heptateuch mentions of the town is included in the OE text, apart from one which confuses it with Bethel.)
