The definition attached to a variant spelling, burhweard and to a dialectical variant, byri-weard is 'A city-guardian; urbis custos, ædilis'. An aedile of course was a Roman officer in charge of law and order.

We have used 'burgweard' before in 'ang' so I was carrying on a previous usage. When it is a masculine noun, 'weard' can be a guardian, but as a feminine noun it is an institution. Hogweard (motung) 14:23, 25 Solmonaþ 2024 (UTC)
